EPFO Passbook Lite vs Full Passbook: Which Shows Your 8.25% Interest

EPFO has credited 8.25 per cent interest for FY26 to 34 crore member accounts. Most members opening their EPFO passbook this week do not realise there are now two different versions of it, and only one shows the full picture.

Quick answer: Passbook Lite, inside the EPFO member portal, gives a quick summary of contributions, withdrawals and current balance. The separate Passbook Portal still gives the full transaction history where the interest entry actually appears. For FY26, interest worth over Rs 1.44 lakh crore was credited across 34 crore accounts.

Two Passbooks, One Account

For years, checking your PF meant a second login on a separate passbook website. That dual-login setup caused password sync problems and a steady stream of member complaints.

EPFO fixed it by building a summary view straight into the member portal. Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced the change, saying members can now reach key services through a single login on the member portal.

The catch is that the older portal did not disappear. Both now exist, they show different levels of detail, and the one you open decides what you see.

What Each Passbook Actually Shows

Think of Passbook Lite as the balance snapshot and the full portal as the bank statement. Here is the split.

Feature Passbook Lite Passbook Portal
Where it lives Inside the member portal Separate passbook website
Login needed Same single login Separate login
Contributions and balance Yes, summarised Yes, in full
Withdrawals Yes, summarised Yes, itemised
Transaction-wise history No Yes
Graphical view No Yes
Best for Quick balance check Tracing the interest entry

So if you only want to know whether the money landed, Lite is faster. If you want to see the interest line item itself, open the full portal.

How to Open Each One

For Passbook Lite, log in to the EPFO unified member portal with your UAN and password, click View in the top menu, then choose Passbook Lite.

For the detailed version, go to the passbook portal separately and select the relevant Member ID. If you have worked at several companies under one UAN, each employer shows as its own Member ID.

Two faster options exist if you skip the login entirely. Send an SMS reading EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899, or give a missed call to 9966044425, both from the mobile number registered with your UAN.

Why Does Your Interest Look Smaller Than Expected?

This is where most members get confused, and it is not an error. Your PF is split into three columns, and they do not all earn interest.

  • EE: your own contribution, 12 per cent of basic pay. Earns interest.
  • ER: the employer’s share that goes into EPF. Earns interest.
  • EPS: the pension portion of the employer’s share. Earns no interest.

The 8.25 per cent applies only to the EPF balance, not to the pension column. So if you total all three and calculate 8.25 per cent, your answer will always be higher than the credited figure.

The pension column also looks oddly small for higher earners. EPS contributions are calculated on a basic wage capped at Rs 15,000, which puts the maximum monthly EPS entry at Rs 1,250 no matter what you actually earn. If you want the arithmetic on your own balance, our breakdown of how much extra money members receive at 8.25 per cent works through it.

If the Interest Has Not Shown Up Yet

Patience first. EPFO auto-processes the credit and field authorities verify it before it reflects, so accounts do not all update on the same day.

Second, check your login timing. After a UAN activation or password change, the member portal and passbook systems need several hours to sync, and repeated attempts during that window can lock the account.

Third, if you changed jobs, an old Member ID may still be sitting untransferred. That is a separate fix, covered in our guide to PF transfers, claim rejections and KYC checks.

Once you can see the number, the more useful question is what it is doing for you. The 8.25 per cent rate looks different depending on your comparison, whether that is EPF against a bank fixed deposit, or how 8.25 per cent compares with the last decade. The wider rule changes are set out in our explainer on the EPF scheme overhaul.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EPFO Passbook Lite?

Passbook Lite is a simplified passbook view built into the EPFO member portal. It shows a summarised snapshot of your contributions, withdrawals and current balance without a separate login.

How is it different from the full passbook?

Passbook Lite gives a summary only. The separate Passbook Portal gives transaction-wise history and a graphical view, which is where the interest credit entry appears in detail.

How do I open Passbook Lite?

Log in to the EPFO unified member portal with your UAN and password, click View in the top menu, then select Passbook Lite.

Where do I see the interest entry?

In the full Passbook Portal, which lists transactions individually. Passbook Lite will show the updated balance but not the itemised interest line.

Why is my interest smaller than I calculated?

Because interest is paid on the EPF balance only. The EPS pension column earns no interest, so including it in your calculation will always overstate the figure.

Does the EPS pension portion earn interest?

No. EPS does not earn interest. The 8.25 per cent applies to your EPF balance, made up of your own contribution and the EPF portion of the employer’s share.

How do I check PF balance by SMS?

Send EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from the mobile number registered with your UAN. Replace ENG with your preferred language code if needed.

What is the missed call number?

Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your UAN-registered mobile number, and you will receive your PF details by SMS.

What if the interest has not been credited?

Wait a few days. EPFO auto-processes the credit and field authorities verify each account before it reflects, so accounts update on different days rather than all at once.

Why can I not log in to the passbook portal?

The member portal and passbook systems sync separately. After a UAN activation or password change, allow several hours before trying, as repeated attempts can lock the account.

What do the EE, ER and EPS columns mean?

EE is your own contribution, ER is the employer’s share credited to EPF, and EPS is the pension portion of the employer’s share. EE and ER earn interest, EPS does not.

How much EPS is credited each month?

EPS is calculated on a basic wage capped at Rs 15,000, so the maximum monthly EPS entry is Rs 1,250 regardless of your actual salary.

Which portal do I use after a job change?

Use the member portal to file the transfer and track it. Your old Member ID stays visible in the passbook until the transfer is completed.
